Holly Holm (+635) upsets Ronda Rousey (-1000)

Knockout, Round 2

UFC 193: Rousey vs Holm — 11/15/2015

This was the classic example of a top fighter believing their own hype. Dominant UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey’s striking has always been on the very poor side, but hype from the fans, media and even her own camp made her believe she would be invincible in a toe-to-toe striking affair against a former boxing world champion. Needless to say, this did not end well for “Rowdy”.

It was clear from the first exchange that Rousey was at a vast skill disadvantage on the feet and could not even come close to landing any real offense of her own. She was repeatedly tagged with clean, hard shots as her punches came up short. Aside from a couple half hearted clinch attempts, Ronda was perfectly content to stay standing despite being dominated. As round 1 ended with a clear score for Holm, you would expect Rousey’s corner to demand in between rounds that she switch to a grappling-oriented gameplan, yet their advice was shocking. Her head coach and cornerman Edmond Tarverdyan told the champ that she was “doing perfect” and to “keep doing what you’re doing.”

As round 2 began, Ronda indeed kept doing what she did in round 1. A vicious flurry from the challenger badly wobbled “Rowdy” then a quick, perfectly accurate headkick floored the now-form UFC champion. She was out as she hit the mat, lying flat on her back, but a few follow punches sealed the deal.

One of the main talking points out of this fight was that it was one of the two biggest UFC upsets in history, if not the biggest. That was never truly the case, though. At least, not according to the betting odds.
